If James Oliverio has his way, the long war between the left-brained
and the right-brained will soon be over. "My goal is to
create a place where artists and engineers, creative people
and technical people, can work together," he said. "I
want to explore fields that don't traditionally overlap, to
create new ways to solve problems, and new problems to solve." |

Built heritage (i.e. Architecture) is said to be one of
the finest forms of human endeavor. Perhaps the idea of capturing
time in a tangible form first prompted people to build monuments
in a quest for immortality. Given the passage of time, however,
there has been significant decay and loss of these historic
structures. |
The first performance of "The Faux Taxi" took place
on April 3, 2003 at the 12th annual Florida Electro-acoustic
Festival and featured an interdisciplinary ensemble of transmedia
DAS sound & video designers operating as a portable television
show- AmbienTV. Free in performing conception but directed by
a shared "pallet" of audio and video source material,
++silica entity attempts to explore generative audio and video
collaboration worldwide. |

Moving through several labs and facilities on campus linked
by new Access Grid technology, the CNN team spent five hours
taping material intended for the new show NEXT, which aired
internationally. CNN Producer Christian Cascone called DW after he visited the
"Dancing Beyond Boundaries" web page on the Internet.
As a result of his interest in this innovative project, Christian
and his team came to the Digital Worlds Media Lab to interview
project principals and gather imagery on the research and technology
behind the intercontinental collaboration. The story aired on
NEXT@CNN on Saturday, April, 27, 2002 and Sunday, April 28,
2002. |

During her stay, Kellie Dipple developed a multi-sited event
for the Access Grid linking between Gainesville (US),
Manchester(UK) and Sydney(Australia). This collaborative work
with Digital Worlds investigates the distribution of live performance
and screen culture across networks, the impact of distribution
on narrative and form and the integration of these technologies
into cultural venues. |

William VanDerKloot describes his philosophy as "making
films that make a difference." And that he has. His original
films have thrilled and educated children by exploring an ocean-going
submarine, crawling around the cockpit of a space shuttle, even
straddling a volcano. Targeting adults, his films have raised
awareness and generated funds to protect the environment. |

Professor James Oliverio gave an invited half-day tutorial at
8th International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia
(VSMM2002). The conference was held in the ancient city of Gyeongju,

was "Which Comes First in the 21st Century: Art, Technology
and Esthetics?", presented as part of the conference focus
on Media Art and Creative Technology. |

The Digital Worlds Institute's project "Dancing Beyond Boundaries"

Diego. |

"The Messenger" is a Concerto for "Batterie" (an old French
term with no English equivalent, referring to both timpani and
