Mono/Poly is an US electro-acoustic duo of saxophone and electronics. Made up of composer and electronics guru Nate Bliton and saxophonist and turntablist Geoff Deibel, this unique ensemble strives to create concert experiences built around contemporary musical works that also utilize different types of media.

Digital EpigraphyDW Professor and Collaborative Team Awarded National Grant to Further Research in Digital Epigraphy

The National Endowment for the Humanities funded the "Digital Epigraphy Toolbox" project, which is a collaborative research initiative between the Digital Worlds Institute and the UF Department of Classics. The PI and coordinator of this transdisciplinary team is Prof. Angelos Barmpoutis (Digital Worlds Institute). The total amount of the award is $50,000 and it will fund the project for the next 2 years.

In his early career, Richard spent seven years managing and supervising visual effects work and teams in the entertainment industry. "Time to Fly Away" was a tribute to the University of Florida Class of 2004. This five-minute digital media production premiered April 30th at the Convocation ceremony on Reitz Union Lawn for over 4,000 people. It included compelling interviews with students from the graduating class, original music by University students Lanae Hale and Gloria Castellon, and a live performance by Ms. Hale.

The movies were premiered at special banquets on the UF campus when the Alumni returned to be inducted into the ranks of the Grand Guard, a prestigious element of the UF community.

CNN visits DW CNN Visits Digital Worlds Media Lab

Moving through several labs and facilities on campus linked by new Access Grid technology, the CNN team spent five hours taping material intended for the new show NEXT, which aired internationally. CNN Producer Christian Cascone called DW after he visited the "Dancing Beyond Boundaries" web page on the Internet. As a result of his interest in this innovative project, Christian and his team came to the Digital Worlds Media Lab to interview project principals and gather imagery on the research and technology behind the intercontinental collaboration. The story aired on NEXT@CNN on Saturday, April, 27, 2002 and Sunday, April 28, 2002.

During her stay, Kellie Dipple developed a multi-sited event for the Access Grid  linking between Gainesville (US), Manchester(UK) and Sydney(Australia). This collaborative work with Digital Worlds investigated the distribution of live performance and screen culture across networks, the impact of distribution on narrative and form and the integration of these technologies into cultural venues.

William VanDerKloot Filmmaker and Director William VanDerKloot Visits Digital Worlds

William VanDerKloot described his philosophy as "making films that make a difference." His original films have thrilled and educated children by exploring an ocean-going submarine, crawling around the cockpit of a space shuttle, even straddling a volcano. Targeting adults, his films have raised awareness and generated funds to protect the environment.

Pittsburgh Symphony's The Messenger The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra presented "The Messenger"
A Collaborative Work with new Music Visualization Technology


"The Messenger" was a Concerto for "Batterie" (an old French term with no English equivalent, referring to both timpani and percussion instruments). The soloist actuated the images as he performed the new orchestral score. The computer programming utilized new music visualization techniques developed at the Digital Worlds Institute.

"Dancing Beyond Boundaries" was an unprecedented distance collaboration between artists, engineers, computer scientists and video producers which premiered at the SuperComputing Global conference in Denver. The choreographer, dancers, animation artists, musicians, computer scientists, engineers and producers were all in different cities in North and South America as the piece was created, rehearsed and performed over the 4 days of the conference.
